A rare winter sandstorm swept across the Korean peninsula from 2ndto 5thJanuary at the begining of this year. People have suffered from the "yellow sand" during the whole New Year Holiday. On 6thJanuary, the Seoul Metropolitan Government of South Korea has announced to dispatch 267 dust sweepers to sweep the road and eliminate the dust left by the dust storm througout the day to relieve the alert of sandstorm. The total sweeping distance is expected to exceed 8,100 kilometers which include all public place such as subway stations, bus stops and bridges. The city government said that the sandstorms which contains heavy metals, harmful bacteria and mycete may cause air pollution, respiratory diseases and affect the plant photosynthesis if they are not sprayed on time.
The sandstorm which is called "yellow sand" by South Koreans and North Koreans normally occurred in spring and rarely in winter with such a long duration and high concentration. At 4 am on 3th January, the density of inhalable particle (ppm10) in Seoul reached 1044 mg/㎥which is the highest since December 2009. Meteorological departments of various city in South Korea have raised the standstorm alert for the first time since May 2009. North Korea was also hit by sandstorm at the same day, people in Pyongyang started to wear masks on the street. Meteorological experts said that the sandstorm was originated from the Gobi Desert of Mongolia due the drought and snow shortage. Mongolia should be the primary source of sandstorms on the Korean Peninsula.
